Right turns cause disruption at Grosvenor Road
The Roads Service have expressed concern that motorists ignoring traffic signals at the Westlink roadworks at Grosvenor Road are putting themselves and others in danger.
Head of the Roads Service Westlink team, Roy Spiers, said that it had become clear that an increasing number of motorists were continuing to make banned right hand turns from the Westlink into Grosvenor Road.
“Motorists who perform this highly dangerous manoeuvre are not only causing delays to traffic flows through the Grosvenor Road junction but are also putting themselves, other motorists and construction workers at risk.
“I would appeal to all motorists travelling along this stretch of road to adhere to the traffic restrictions that have been put in place for the good of all.
“The police are aware of the problem and will be enforcing the temporary regulations as required,” he added.
Anne Monaghan, Public Liaison Manager, for the works contractors HMC, said: “The banned turns are in place for good reasons, we are concerned about the safety of the travelling public and our workforce.”
She added that the Road Safety Audits carried out at the site had also shown there are a large proportion of motorists travelling in excess of the 30mph temporary speed limit that is in operation at Grosvenor Road roundabout. Also pedestrians are still continuing to cross the Westlink instead of using the subway, which is clearly signed.
“While speed limits are being observed during the morning and evening rush-hours, mainly due to large volumes of vehicles on the road during these times, during the day a large proportion of motorists are travelling at speeds of up to 50mph and some instances in excess of this. At night motorists are travelling at up to 70mph.
“I would ask that both motorists and pedestrians be aware of the necessity to follow the traffic management arrangements that have been put in place to ensure these complex works are progressed as efficiently and, above all, as safely as possible.”
