McCartney family meet Senator Kennedy
The mother of murdered Belfast man Robert McCartney has met with senior US politician Edward Kennedy in Washington in a bid to persuade him to put pressure on Republicans to assist in bringing her son's killers to justice.
Senator Kennedy met with Mrs McCartney, her sister and daughter and described them as "profiles in courage."
Speaking after the meeting, Mrs McCartney said that she was confident that he would do all he could to find those responsible for her son's murder.
She said: "He was very supportive and he is genuine about this. He would like to see something done to catch Robert's murderers. He said he would see what he could do and put it to [Sinn Fein leader] Gerry Adams when he meets him."
After his meeting with the McCartney's, Mr Kennedy said that the murder was a "defining issue" and commended them for persevering with their campaign "despite intimidation and harassment."
The veteran politician is due to meet with Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams during St Patrick's Day celebrations in the White House over the next few days.
He has already backed a ban on Sinn Fein fund raising during their visit to Washington, however he agreed to meet Mr Adams as he felt that the "completion of decommissioning was a turning point".
Robert McCartney was fatally stabbed outside a bar in Belfast City Centre in January 2005.
The murder, led to a campaign by his family to find those responsible and have them brought to justice.
So far, they have met with US President, George Bush, the Prime Minister Tony Blair, and Taoiseach Bertie Ahern.

Paula McCartney said a woman told her she would be put out of the area and also that her family had to stop handing out leaflets about a vigil in Robert’s memory when they were confronted by about a dozen people.
