George Best tribute launched into Belfast skies

A high-flying tribute in honour of football legend George Best was launched into the Belfast skies earlier today.

Airline Flybe, has named one of its aircrafts after the former Manchester United star, which also features an image on the side of the plane of the footballer in his glory days, which will serve the Belfast to Manchester route.

George's father, Dickie Best, who unveiled the image, which was hidden beneath a red drape, attended the launch at Belfast City Airport, along with Best's four sisters, his brother and son Calum.

Speaking earlier, Calum Best described the past few months as an emotional rollercoaster. He said: "It is quite surreal seeing my father on the side of a plane. He was a modest man but I am sure he would have approved."

He added that it was a fitting tribute as it connects the city where his father was born with the city in which his legacy started. George's father also expressed his delight at the gesture and said that the family had no hesitation in giving their approval.

Mr Best also added that it would provide a major boost for the George Best Foundation, which will be launched in May.

The former Northern Ireland Soccer International, died in November at the age of 59 after suffering multiple organ failure.

Following today's launch, the Best family were among the first to fly to Manchester in the honorary aircraft, ahead of a memorial service in the city tomorrow.
