East Belfast man remanded in custody accused of murdering his wife

A 52-year old east Belfast man has been remanded in custody charged with murdering his wife.

James McNeill, 52, from London Road in the east of the city, appeared in Belfast Magistrates Court earlier today in connection with the murder of 51-year-old Elizabeth McNeill at the weekend.

During the hearing, the defence solicitor told the court that his client had admitted to assaulting his wife on Saturday night, however did not intend to kill her.

Police were called to the couple's home on Sunday morning, following the discovery of Mrs McNeill's body.

A second man was also being held for questioning in relation to the death, but has since been released without charge.

James McNeill was remanded in custody, due to appear in court again next month via video-link.
