Two shots fired during north Belfast rioting

Six police officers suffered injuries and two warning shots were fired this morning during a riot in North Belfast.

A police spokesperson said that shortly before 1.00am a man was arrested for disorderly behaviour, but was released pending further inquiries.

Following this a number of police officers came under attack in Montreal Street. As a police car left Tennant Street Police Station to go to the aid of their colleagues, four men got out of a silver coloured car and began attacking the front of the station with bottles and other missiles.

The men then fled in the car and were followed by a police vehicle into Montreal Street. The car was abandoned by the men who made off on foot down an alleyway pursued by two police officers.

Police said one man was arrested for public disorder offences.

However, the officers were surrounded by a hostile crowd of around 30 people. A female police constable was struck in the face with a bottle. Retreating to their vehicle the officers were trapped in it.

Colleagues who came to their aid were unable to reach the vehicle and two shots were discharged to disperse the crowd. Both trapped officers were subsequently freed from the severely damaged vehicle.

A vehicle was set on fire in nearby Cambria Street.

The police Ombudsman has been informed of the incident where weapons were discharged.
