Coldest night in Ireland for 10 years
Temperatures in Ireland have plunged to their lowest levels in a decade.
According to Met Eireann some areas experienced -8°C and road surface temperatures as low as -16°C were reported, bringing conditions not seen since the winter of 1995.
Forecasters are continuing to monitor an Atlantic weather system, which could bring further snowfalls to some areas on Friday. Over the weekend further significant snowfall is expected across northern Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Widespread icy roads and heavy snow showers are forecast for Northern Ireland on Friday, which will spread southwards through the morning and into the afternoon.
Some bus services in the north have been hit and a number of stranded lorries on the main Coleraine to Limavady road have been cleared.
Roads Service confirmed that further salting of the scheduled road network is underway on Friday morning in all areas of Northern Ireland. However, motorists are advised to exercise extreme caution, particularly when driving on untreated roads.
The cold snap is expected to continue over the weekend and the Met Office has predicting that temperatures in Scotland could plunge to -20°C on Friday night, approaching the lowest March temperature ever recorded -22.8 °C at Logie Coldstone.
Scotland has already experienced more than 20 cm (eight inches) of snow causing widespread travel disruption and many school closures.
Further south, Wales has also been hard hit with more than 15 cm (six inches) in parts of north Wales.
