Derry City to commemorate 1916 Easter Rising
Councillors in Londonderry have backed plans to hold commemorations for the 90th Anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising in the city.
The proposal was made by Sinn Fein and supported by the SDLP, however Unionist representatives have strongly opposed it.
Nationalists claim that it will mark one of the most crucial events in Irish history, however Unionists believe that it will isolate members of the Protestant Community.
SDLP councillor Pat Ramsay today issued a proposal to amend the original idea put forward by Sinn Fein, to include everyone in the celebrations by making children the overall theme.
Mr Ramsay suggested that all leisure centres and museums should be free of charge for young people throughout the day and that the City's Youth Council should get involved in the preparations.
He said: "The 1916 rising was a hugely important part of our history and it cannot be airbrushed out."
"This is not about coat-trailing but about enabling the council to commemorate what was a turning point in Irish history."
However, the DUP's Joe Millar has said that Derry City Council should not get involved in the celebrations if they are trying to remain on neutral ground with both sides of the community.
He also added that the DUP would not be supporting something that is "anti-British".
Representatives from Derry Council and the Youth Council are expected to discuss preparations for the event next week.
