Secretary of State imposes March deadline
Following today's talks at Stormont between Secretary of State, Peter Hain, Irish Foreign Minister Dermot Ahern and representatives from the key political parties, a deadline has now been imposed for progress to be made in restoring devolution.
Politicians now have until March 8 to break the political deadlock if there is to be legislative changes to the way Northern Ireland is governed.
The Secretary of State introduced a new Bill to the House of Commons last week, which both British and Irish governments believe could be used to enable any legislative changes that are required to be made to the plans for devolved government.
The DUP, who refused to show up today, as they felt that it was pointless to hold discussions with the Irish Foreign Minister, along with the UUP have proposed a return to the Assembly without an all inclusive power sharing executive.
However, both Sinn Fein and the SDLP have rejected the idea.
Earlier today, Mr Hain said that the March 8 deadline was important in the process for boxing off those issues, which would need immediate legislation in the Northern Ireland Bill.
