T-Mobile introduce flat rate for UK mobile users in the Republic
T-Mobile UK has today announced a new flat rate for mobile calls made from the Republic of Ireland for its contract customers in the UK.
The new tariff will mean that customers of T-Mobile will now no longer face unpredictable costs and inadvertent roaming charges when in the Irish Republic or close to the border.
Enterprise Minister Angela Smith today welcomed the announcement.
She said: “The issue of inadvertent mobile phone roaming is a huge inconvenience to many people, both north and south, and is a significant barrier to effective cross-border trading. This announcement is good news for T-Mobile’s contract customers, and introduces more choice for the Northern Ireland market. I hope that new tariffs can be introduced quickly to bring similar benefits to their pre-pay customers in Northern Ireland."
The Minister continued: “It is clear that my work with Noel Dempsey, the Republic of Ireland Communications Minister, to put pressure on the mobile companies to deal with this issue, is bringing tangible results for consumers and businesses. This news follows O2 Ireland’s announcement last week that it is abolishing inadvertent roaming charges for its customers. It is clear that other mobile operators will have to respond."
She concluded that she would further discuss the issue with Mr Dempsey at the end of March, when they hope to see further progress.
