Funeral of stabbing victim takes place

The funeral of murdered father-of-six Gerard Devlin has taken place this morning in West Belfast.

Several hundred mourners gathered at the Corpus Christi church in Ballymurphy for requiem mass.

Father Dan O'Rawe told mourners that the deceased as a "likeable rogue" and said that he understood that people had rage in their hearts, but he said "we are more than anything that evil can throw at us".

The 39-year-old died last weekend after receiving a fatal stab wound during an incident in the Whitecliff Parade area of Ballymurphy.

The stabbing is believed to be the result of an ongoing feud with another family in the area, which had forced Mr Devlin to move away. The victim is believed to have returned to Whitecliff Parade to collect his children when he was killed.

Since the murder, tensions in Ballymurphy have remained high and a significant police presence has remained in the area.

Four members of the Notorantonio family have appeared in court charged with his murder, and have all been remanded in custody due to reappear in court via video link at a later date.
