Three fishermen rescued after explosion on boat

Three men have been rescued following a fire on board a fishing trawler off the coast of Kilkeel, Co. Down.

The crew sent out a mayday signal yesterday afternoon, after a gas cylinder exploded while they were out fishing for prawns.

The three men managed to get into a life raft, before being rescued by the Coastguard.

One man was airlifted to hospital.

A spokesperson from the Fishermen's Mission has said that the skipper of the boat, Alex Slater had risked his own life to put out a distress signal after the explosion occurred.

He added that had it not been for the quick actions of Mr Slater, his two colleagues might have not survived the ordeal.
