Elections to be held to find new Presbyterian Moderator

Voting is about to get underway to find the next moderator of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland.

Presbyteries from all over the island will take part in the election to find a successor for current Moderator, Dr Harry Uprichard.

The nominations will be forwarded to Church House in Belfast, where the votes will be counted, and the name of the new moderator will be announced next Tuesday night.

The Presbyterian Church is the largest of the Protestant denominations in Ireland and has approximately 300,000 members.

This year's election is likely to see one of last year's runners up as a contender for the title.

However, as Rev Alistair Kennedy and Dr Joe Fell, who were two of the forerunners in the race, have withdrawn, it is likely that the Reverend David Clarke, who was also one of last year's finalists, may face some stiff competition from some new names.

The successful candidate will be known as the moderator-designate until June when he is officially installed at the church's general assembly.
