Londonderry lawyer remanded on terror charges

A Limavady solicitor, who had private meetings with clients taped, has appeared in Antrim Magistrates Court charged with attempting to incite a murder.

Mr Manmohan Sandhu, 41, from Colby Avenue in Derry is also charged with four counts of attempting to pervert the course of justice in relation to the murder of Jameson Lockhart who was shot dead during a loyalist feud by the UVF in July 2005.

A detective today confirmed that police had taped conversations, which took place in Antrim Police Station between the solicitor and clients who were suspected of terrorist crimes.

Mr Sandhu was arrested last Tuesday and has been questioned over 20 times since then.

The charges relate to the murder of 25-year-old Jameson Lockhart who was gunned down as he sat in a lorry on the lower Newtownards Road in Belfast in July.

Mr Sandhu is accused of attempting to frustrate the murder enquiry by instructing that a key suspect be "taken offside" before police had a chance to question him.

He was also accused of attempting to frustrate the investigation into the attempted murder of Jonathan Hillier last August, and is also accused of attempting to incite an unknown person to murder him.

Mr Sandhu replied "definitely not guilty" to the charges, and was remanded in custody.
