Accident victim receives £1m compensation

A Belfast boy knocked down by a car while playing on the Stewartstown road six years ago has been awarded over £1m in compensation.

Matthew McCarty from Twinbrook, who appeared in court in a wheelchair, suffered serious injuries to his head and body when he was hit by a car.

Following the accident he was left in a coma for three months, but he made a good recovery and attends Fleming Fulton School where has successfully completed 'O' Levels exams and is looking forward to taking more exams later this year.

The legal action was settled without admission of liability by the car driver.

The award is to be held by the court and officials will administer it in conjunction with Mr McCarthy's mother and solicitors.
