Deer escapes after rest of herd is culled
A young deer has survived after the rest of its herd was killed during a cull.
The Forest Service thought it had killed the entire group at Seskinore Forest Park in County Tyrone, but it is believed that one animal took cover in the undergrowth and emerged a week later, having escaped death.
The reason given for the culling is that a fence was causing danger to the safety and welfare of the animals, so the Forest Service felt it was best to kill the herd.
Local people are furious about the slaughtering of the seven deer, describing them as a natural asset and a popular attraction for the community, who had been hoping to eventually take over the responsibility of looking after them.
The forest had been home to the herd of Japanese Sika deer for the past three decades and many people regularly visited the forest to watch them feed.
News of the cull has caused a great deal of distress for many people.
One local resident expressed her sadness at the loss of the herd and said that she had cried her heart out when she found out.
She said: "They were pets - they were not wild animals. They were an attraction - everyone came to feed the deer and have a walk around."
The department of Agriculture have said that they are going to look for an alternative home for the surviving deer.

Police in Strabane have launched an investigation into the discovery of a deer carcass on land at Kirlish Road in Drumquin. A report of suspected deer poaching in the area was made to police at around 4.15pm on Sunday, 29 October. Two men were reportedly seen in the area where the carcass was found in a field.

Stag On The Loose in Newry Shot Dead
A stag which had been on the loose in Newry has been shot, the PSNI have confirmed. The animal was shot dead in Newry as it posed a risk to the public. A police spokesperson said: "Following a report of a stag running loose in the St Patrick's Avenue area of Newry this morning specially trained firearms officers were tasked to assist.
