Ombudsman investigates weekend road death

The Police Ombudsman's Office has appealed for information following a fatal road traffic accident in Londonderry, at the weekend.

Noel Doherty, 23, from Drumleck Drive in the Shantallow area of the city, died after his car struck a tree on the Culmore Road at around 3.30am on Saturday morning.

Police said that they were following the car, when the crash happened.

The police ombudsman investigates any incident in which police are present when a person dies, and launched an investigation after being informed by the police.

Ombudsman investigators attended the scene of the accident and spoke to police and civilian witnesses.

A forensic examination of the scene was also carried out.

Investigators particularly want to hear from anyone who may have a seen a blue Renault Megane car or an unmarked black Ford Mondeo police vehicle.

The ombudsman's office wants anyone who may have witnessed anything in relation to the incident to contact them on 028 90 828740.
