Plaque to be erected in honour of councillors

Magherafelt District Council have voted to erect a plaque to honour two murdered Sinn Fein Councillors.

Councillors John Davey and Bernard O'Hagan were shot dead during two separate incidents involving loyalist paramilitaries in 1989 and 1991.

Sinn Fein Councillor and Magherafelt Chairman, Sean Kerr today spoke on behalf of his party colleagues. He said: This plaque is dedicated to the memory of our two comrades, John Davey and Bernard O Hagan who were murdered by unionist paramilitaries on 14th February 1989 and 16th Sept 1991.

"It is in recognition of the hard work and dedication both John and Bernard

showed in carrying out their duties on the council and to the service they

provided to their constituents and to the community."

ALLOWANCE INCREASE FOR LOCAL COUNCILLORS
DISTRICT Councils are to be permitted to increase the allowances paid to their councillors by approximately 30 per cent with effect from 1 July 2001. Minister of the Environment Sam Foster made the announcement following a review of councillors’ existing remuneration.

A long-running row over the proposed John Lewis store for Lisburn yesterday spilled onto the steps of Belfast City Hall when Lisburn councillors told of their disappointment at being "excluded from a meeting" about town centre regeneration including the Sprucefield development.

Blue Plaque Unveiled In Honour Of Thomas Sinclair
A blue plaque has been unveiled in honour of the achievements of Ulster Covenant author, Thomas Sinclair. The First Minister Arlene Foster, in association with the Ulster Scots Agency, unveiled the plaque as part of a series of projects being launched at an event at Sinclair Seaman's Church.
