Discussions to begin on site for sports stadium
The proposal for a international sports stadium at the former Maze site is to be discussed by the Irish Football Association at a meeting on Thursday night.
An IFA sub-committee will present the report to their 17-man executive, who in turn must discuss the proposal with representatives from the world of Football, Rugby and GAA, who must all back the project in order for it to go ahead.
The government has announced that it wants a decision made before the end of January.
Sports Minister David Hanson has stated that there is no alternative plan to the Maze site and that all the sporting bodies must agree in this area or the plan will be abandoned.
It is suspected that the IFA will not make their final decision on Thursday, but a poll conducted on behalf of the IFA Maze sub-committee is believed to have gathered wide support for the project.
It has been argued that the Maze site will be too big in size and other sites such as the former Maysfield Leisure Centre and Roseau Park would be better suited to the development, but the government, who already own the former prison site, are adamant that it remains the only viable option.
If the international stadium goes ahead, it will be likely to host a number of football events in the 2012 Olympics.
