Police warn elderly to beware of strangers

Police in North Belfast have advised elderly or vulnerable people to be vigilant when answering the door to strangers.

This follows a robbery at the home of a pensioner in the Alliance Park area of the city last night.

A man called to the home of the pensioner at around 5.30pm and pushed his way into her house.

The man then escaped with the woman's handbag, which contained cash.

The robber is described as being aged between 30 - 40 years old, around 6ft tall and well built. He was wearing a beige coloured top.

Police have appealed for anyone with information on the robbery to contact them on 0845 600 8000.

Man Arrested Over Armed Robbery In West Belfast
A man has been arrested in connection with an armed robbery in west Belfast. The robbery happened at a shop on Caffrey Avenue at around 9.30pm on Tuesday, 27 February. The suspect threatened a member of staff and made off with a sum of cash and cigarettes. He was arrested on Wednesday, 28 February, and has been detained in police custody.

Man Arrested Over Murder Of George Gilmore
A 39-year-old man has been arrested by police investigating the murder of George Gilmore. Mr Gilmore, aged 44, was shot in the neck in Carrickfergus on Monday, 13 March. He died from his injuries in hospital the following day, 14 March. The suspect was detained in Co Antrim on Wednesday, 12 April, and is being questioned at Musgrave police station.

Man questioned about 1988 murder
A man has been arrested in connection with police inquiries into a murder in 1988. The body of Lily Smyth, 66, was found in her flat at Moveen House in Dunmurry on October 9, 1988. The pensioner had been strangled. A police spokesperson said that a 43-year-old man had been arrested and is being questioned at Antrim Police Station.

Attack On Pensioner Condemned
An 80-year-old man has been tied up in his own home during an aggravated burglary in County Antrim. He was attacked and trussed-up with cable by a gang at about 10.40pm on Tuesday in the Calvert Road area, outside Dundrod. They demanded money from the pensioner having tied him with the cable while the property was ransacked.
