Northern Ireland is first in Europe with 100% Broadband
Northern Ireland is understood to be the first region in Europe with 100% broadband access.
Almost £10 million of European funding has been invested to make broadband universally available in NI, to ensure that Northern Ireland is able to remain a contender and to compete successfully in the global market, is in place.
Enterprise Minister, Angela Smith, who was today visiting the MJM Group, a specialist joinery outfitting company in Rathfriland, said: "This is a significant achievement for Northern Ireland to lead Europe in broadband availability. Every household, business, school and library in Northern Ireland will be able to access broadband regardless of their location."
Alastair Hamilton, Director BT Business said: "The significance of broadband access must not be understated - the simple fact is Northern Ireland is one of the few regions in the world where all our citizens both at work and at home can avail of the benefits of broadband irrespective of their location.
"Now that 100% availability has been achieved our next big challenge is to utilise broadband and the benefits it brings. Northern Ireland has led the race for broadband availability now we must set the pace for take-up and usage."
He added that advances in modern telecommunications move fast and Angela Smith recognised that Northern Ireland cannot stand still. He concluded that we need to build on this achievement and look to the future for even lower broadband prices along with increased speeds becoming more widely available as services and demand increase.
