ASDA store to provide jobs boost in Strabane
The Social Development Minister, David Hanson, has hailed the arrival of a £15 million ASDA store in Strabane as a "milestone."
The existing ASDA store will move from its current location to a new larger site, twice its current size, creating almost 200 new jobs over the next two years.
Mr Hanson revealed that the Department for Social Development has worked closely with local developers over the past few years in order to resolve any difficulties, which may have arisen in choosing a site for this development.
The Minister said: "I am pleased to see the commitment and perseverance required from all those involved in this project resulting in the arrival in Strabane of ASDA which has regularly been voted one of the UK's best employers.
"This development will consolidate the positive work that DSD has undertaken in the town in recent years in association with Strabane District Council including the new £3 million Arts and Cultural Centre due for completion in 2007."
He added that the DSD were committed to the redevelopment of Strabane and the creation of jobs and facilities required by local people. The ongoing environmental improvements and the potential for further developments in the town, provides the framework to deliver real regeneration benefits and influence the way the town progresses over he coming years.
This new ASDA store will bring an area of unused land back into productive use, and will make the area more attractive.
It is hoped that the new store will open in early 2007 subject to planning permission.
