Golden Wonder placed in administration

Crisp manufacturer Golden Wonder were placed in administration today following multi-million pound trading losses in the last two years.

Administrators Kroll said the company had suffered “serious trading difficulties” in a market dominated by rival Walkers.

The UK-based firm's difficulties place around 850 jobs at risk.

The firm, whose brands include Golden Wonder, Nik-Naks and Wheat Crunchies, had suffered falling sales in the fiercely competitive snack food sector in recent years.

In 2004, Golden Wonder reported losses of £10.8 million and in a statement by administrators Kroll losses in 2005 were described as "significant."

Kroll said a decision to close the main crisp production plant at Corby, Northamptonshire, where 350 people work had already been taken. When the Corby plant was opened it was one of the world's largest crisp factories.

Other brands owned by Golden Wonder include Ringos and Pot Noodle and a range of other snack foods.

Kroll said that they were looking at all options for the business and were hopeful that a sale could be secured.
