Coca-Cola plant to be built near Lisburn
A major new manufacturing and bottling plant for Coca-Cola is to be built in Northern Ireland.
Environment Minister Jeff Rooker is to grant planning permission for the plant, which is to be built just outside Lisburn.
The new development at the Knockmore Hill area of the city, will provide an all-Ireland bottling plant to replace the existing facilities both north and south of the border which do not have sufficient space in order to allow the business to expand.
Coca-Cola are said to have decided on the Lisburn site after having considered over 60 locations throughout Ireland.
The company said that they believed the Knockmore Hill site to be the least environmentally sensitive site and the one that best met their requirements. The site also has access to water extracted from an underlying sandstone aquifer at Lambeg, which is of proven quality and has been used for the production of bottled water for a number of years.
The proposals for the operation will include the widening of the Lissue Road, leading into the site, and upgrading of the level crossing on the main Belfast-Dublin rail line.
Mr Rooker said: "This major industrial project represents £53m of inward investment and should provide long term economic benefits to the whole of Northern Ireland. It will safeguard existing jobs and create further employment opportunities both with Coca-Cola and in the wider economy."
DOE Planning Service has received no objections to the proposed development.

Day two of a high profile royal visit to Northern Ireland saw The Queen adding fizz to a recently opened soft drinks plant in Co Antrim. This morning, Her Majesty and Prince Philip were at the Coca-Cola plant in Lambeg, near Lisburn to see at first hand the new £93m Coca-Cola HBC Northern Ireland manufacturing plant that initially opened in August.

The US-based drinks giant plans to outsource its Northern Ireland distribution to another company, as part of a company-wide restructuring. The firm told staff at the Knockmore plant near Lisburn they would enter into a 30-day consultation period.
