Closed power plant problems 'overstated'
NIE have today stated that it is essential that the Coolkeeragh power station in Londonderry is up and running again as soon as possible, and have played down reports of blackouts.
The station, which opened last June, has been out of action since last month and the company who own the station, the Irish Republic's Electricity Supply Board have said that there had been a problem with a steam turbine, but it would be operational by January 20.
NIE spokesman Robin Greer said the temporary closure should not have knock-on effects for Northern Ireland power supplies.
He said: "In theory, it shouldn't have any impact on Northern Ireland," but added that at a peak period, if other stations like Ballylumford, Kilroot or maybe even the Moyle interconnector were forced to close while Coolkeeragh is out of action they may run into difficulties."
However, he stressed that there was no imminent threat of blackouts, but in a worst-case scenario, there was a very low risk they could happen.
The high efficiency gas-powered Coolkeeragh station replaced the old heavy fuel plant, which had operated on the site since 1959.
The natural gas for the plant is provided via the new north-west pipeline, which was completed in October 2004.
