Northern Ireland £11.4m train care facility opens
A new multi-million-pound Train Care Facility to clean Northern Ireland’s new trains has opened in north Belfast.
The Government-funded facility, which has been in operation since the end of October, was built at a cost of £11.4million to provide the highest standards of cleanliness and maintenance for the 23 new trains now operating across the railways network. It is the latest in a number of recent Government investments in public transport.
Speaking at the official opening of the new Centre, the Permanent Secretary for the Department for Regional Development, Stephen Quinn, said: “The Centre is a very impressive complex and is a striking example of the changes taking place within public transport in Northern Ireland.
"It is an important development in promoting the use of public transport by helping to ensure the railways provide attractive high quality services and constitute a viable alternative to traveling by car.”
Over the next three years (to March 2008) the Departments capital funding for bus and rail will amount to over £210 million. In addition to this, Government is providing public transport with some £180 million revenue funding including over £60 million as a direct subvention towards railway running costs.
