Hillsborough gathering celebrates life of Mo Mowlam
A celebration of the life of former Northern Ireland Secretary of State Mo Mowlam took place at Hillsborough Castle on Thursday.
Some 200 guests attended the event which was hosted by current Secretary of State Peter Hain and attended by Mo’s husband Jon Norton and family.
Mr Hain, former Security Minister Adam Ingram, Baroness May Blood and Jon Norton all spoke during the evening and paid tribute to the contribution made by Mo in advancing the peace process in Northern Ireland. Video messages from Prime Minister Tony Blair, Taoiseach Bertie Ahern, Hillary Clinton and Rory Bremner were also broadcast.
“I was privileged to have known Mo, both as a colleague but also as a friend. She was a courageous politician who was driven by an innate determination to fight injustice," Mr Hain said.
“During her time as Secretary of State, Mo Mowlam played a key role in making Northern Ireland a better place to live.
“Mo loved Northern Ireland and people across Northern Ireland loved her. Breaking down barriers with her informal manner and warm personality, her ability to make people feel at ease endeared Mo to so many. She will never be forgotten."
Mo Mowlam died on August 19 following a short spell of illness. During her distinguished political career she served as Secretary of State for Northern Ireland from May 1997 until October 1999.
The children’s park in the Stormont Estate, which was built at Mo’s suggestion, is to be named in her memory.
