Employment initiative aims to 'engage' homeless

The Government has unveiled new plans to help homeless people in Northern Ireland get back into employment.

Social Development Minister David Hanson launched the ENGAGE programme, which aims to help homeless people find employment, saying it reaffirmed his commitment to assisting homeless people in Northern Ireland.

"As well as being a cause of homelessness, unemployment can also be a consequence of it," the Minister said. "Becoming homeless is a very worrying and distressful experience, which can cause problems for people who are also trying to cope with the pressures of their jobs.

"Some employers have a negative perception of homeless people which we must challenge, not just in the community as a whole but particularly with employers and the business community. I believe that the ENGAGE programme will prove to be a powerful factor in breaking the cycle of homelessness."

Funded by the European Social Fund, the ENGAGE programme, which will involve a range of voluntary, statutory and corporate bodies, aims to create a regional model to help develop the employability skills of homeless people.
