Recycling boosts social well being says Minister
Increased recycling also increases social well being, Environment Minister Jeff Rooker has told delegates at a conference in Belfast today.
Speaking to the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) open meeting in the King's Hall Conference Centre the Minister said waste management was fast becoming one of the most limiting factors "to our social well being and economic development, because waste production has such an impact on our natural resources, environment and quality of life".
The Minister also praised the contribution that WRAP had made to managing waste in Northern Ireland and emphasised its future role in the movement within the new Waste Management Strategy towards resources rather than waste.
"This signifies a greater need for effective planning, from supply of materials through product manufacture, consumption, reuse or recycling, and eventual disposal," he said.
"In the transition towards efficient resource management, our actions need to focus on those key stages of the life cycle which have greatest influence on limiting waste and increasing material recycling."
WRAP (the Waste and Resources Action Programme) is a UK-wide programme, established by the Government in 2001.
It is set up as a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee by DEFRA and the DTI, and sponsored by the devolved administrations of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
