Minister pledges to eradicate fuel poverty
Everyone should be able to live in a house which is comfortable, fit and warm, Social Development Minister David Hanson said today.
Launching the Warm Homes Scheme annual report 2004/05, the Minister said fuel poverty remains a scourge in Northern Ireland society and that he was committed to doing everything he could to ensure that it is eradicated.
"There are many challenges ahead and the most effective way to tackle these is on the basis of a partnership approach," the Minister said. "We can, with the Warm Homes Scheme over the next few years, make a major contribution towards improving the quality of life, and more importantly, the life expectancy, of the most vulnerable members of our society."
Since it began in 2001, the Warm Homes Scheme has assisted over 25,000 vulnerable households and continues to make a major contribution towards improving the quality of life of those in fuel poverty.
Funding for the scheme has increased from just under £3 million in 2001 to just under £15 million in the current financial year and despite the many pressures on public funding the target of 8,250 participants each year continues to be achieved.
