Hain welcomes 'Love Ulster' rally assurances
Secretary of State Peter Hain has welcomed the assurances given by the organisers of a 'Love Ulster' rally this coming weekend that it will be "peaceful and dignified".
The Secretary of State met the organising committee of the rally, which takes place at Woodvale Park on Saurday, in Stormont Castle on Tuesday.
Up to 30,000 people are expected to attend the event which was given the green light at a Belfast City Council committee meeting also on Tuesday.
Mr Hain said: “The Government has always fully acknowledged and supported the right of people to peacefully demonstrate because it is one of the foundation stones of a democratic society.
"The meeting with the committee organising the Love Ulster rally was very constructive and I welcome their unequivocal assurances that they are confident that it will be peaceful and dignified.
"I recognise that there are many issues of deep concern within loyalist communities and I will be exploring these when I meet with this group again.”
At an earlier sub-committee meeting of the city council an application to use the park was voted down by nationalists because of health and safety reasons however following assurances from organisers that they could meet a 26-point criteria list, the event was given the go-ahead.
