Minister opens £1m refurbished Discovery Centre
Rural Development Minister Jeff Rooker has officially opened the newly refurbished Lough Neagh Discovery Centre at the cost of £1 million.
Speaking at the opening, the Minister highlighted the importance of protecting the environment, whilst also promoting business opportunities for local people.
"Promoting and protecting Northern Ireland's unique natural habitats is the philosophy behind this new centre. It is one of Northern Ireland's top tourist destinations with 200,000 visitors each year to Oxford Island Nature Reserve on the edge of Lough Neagh," he said.
"This Centre will help visitors from throughout Northern Ireland and much further afield to discover the beauty of Oxford Island. The improvements to this building will showcase the tremendous beauty of this rural area and increase visitors understanding and interest in the environment and in the Lough Neagh Wetlands."
Over £1 million has been invested in renovating and refurbishing the Centre which is owned by Craigavon Borough Council. The works were part-funded by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) under the European Union Programme for Building Sustainable Prosperity, which contributed £172,500 as part of the Rural Development Programme.
