Minister aims to toughen up road safety laws

Environment Minister Jeff Rooker has proposed new road safety measures to cut the number of deaths on Northern Ireland's roads.

The Minister said he wanted to improve on figures released by the DoE which revealed that since 2002 there had been a 24% reduction in people killed or seriously injured and a 39% drop on the number of children killed or seriously injured on local roads.

Mr Rooker continued: "There is still a long way to go and reducing these figures even further will get more and more difficult. I believe that the legislation proposed in this consultation will build on what has been achieved and help us reach these targets.

"These proposals have the potential to deliver the most significant Road Safety legislative programme in Northern Ireland for many years. I hope that everyone who wishes to do so will contribute to the consultation exercise."

Among the new rash of measure include penalty points and greater fines for non-wearing of seatbelts; powers for police to seize uninsured vehicles; and making the display of MOT discs compulsory.

The consultation exercise is to run from 6 October 2005 to 12 January 2006, with the aim of having the new powers in place by July 2006.
