Deprived areas promised help by Government
A prosperous Northern Ireland will only be achieved when deprived areas experience real benefits, Social Development Minister David Hanson has said.
Mr Hanson was speaking during a visit to the Greater Shankill area as part of his ongoing engagement with elected representatives and community leaders, particularly those from loyalist and unionist communities.
Accompanied by community leaders, the Minister visited the DSD supported projects on the West Circular and Woodvale Roads and discussed social and economic issues with local people.
He said: "I do not pretend that I can wave a magic wand and cure all the long-standing and deep-seated problems in these communities. But I do want to hear their concerns at first hand. I also want to emphasise that the Department for Social Development is already working hard on the ground to tackle disadvantage and regenerate these communities.
"We are, for example, supporting the work of Streetbeat and Forum for Action on Substance Abuse (FASA). They play an important role in providing education, training, counselling and youth programmes and improving the capacity of local people to address the needs of their areas.
"I have had very detailed discussions about the many real issues facing these communities. Not all of them can be settled overnight but we are working to ensure that local people benefit more fully from all Government services through our Neighbourhood Renewal Strategy."
Streetbeat was established in 1991 to address the needs of Young People, Adults and the local community. The organisation has developed and expanded its service delivery to include the following wide range of programmes. BRO is providing £27,000 to the group under its Neighbourhood Renewal initiative.
