Sex discrimination law extended

Legislation prohibiting sex discrimination has been "extended, strengthened and clarified" by regulations which take effect in Northern Ireland tomorrow.

The new regulations implement the EU amended Equal Treatment Directive on equal treatment between men and women in employment, vocational training and working conditions.

The regulations amend the existing law - the Sex Discrimination (Northern Ireland) Order 1976 and the Equal Pay Act (Northern Ireland) 1970 - to extend protection from discrimination to office holders, "and to make it clear that discrimination on grounds of pregnancy and maternity, harassment on grounds of sex and sexual harassment are all unlawful."

An eight week time limit for the return of questionnaires in sex discrimination cases will also be introduced. In addition, the Regulations provide a revised definition of indirect discrimination in line with the law dealing with discrimination on other grounds, and make further amendments of a technical nature.

Advice and guidance on the legislation can be obtained from the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland.

New legislation to improve clarity and fairness in sex discrimination cases in Northern Ireland has been passed and is due to take effect from 20 August 2001. Sex discrimination legislation now includes a definition of indirect discrimination, and clarifies where the burden of proof lies in sex discrimination cases.

Two Female Scientists Settle Sex Discrimination Cases For £47,500
Two female scientists have settled sex discrimination cases against a public body for £47,500. Carole Daly from Belfast and Hollie Lewis from Bangor both worked for the Agri-Food and Bio-Sciences Institute in south Belfast. They both claimed they were consistently treated less favourably by two male co-workers.

Sex Attack Victims 'Under Age'
Over half of victims of sex crime in Northern Ireland are under 18. That's according to PSNI figures that show 56% of all victims of reported sex abuse – including rape, indecent assault and indecent exposure – between 2008 and 2009 were under 18, with an average of three sex offences against children recorded every day.
