Works starts on £2.8m arts centre in Strabane
A new £2.8 million Arts and Cultural Exhibition Centre will help to revitalise Strabane, Department for Social Development (DSD) Minister David Hanson said today.
The flagship project, which is expected to have a major impact on the town, will be built on the site of a former cattle market. It will also adjoin the new Strabane Library.
With a 250-seat auditorium, the centre will offer a modern venue for arts and entertainment as well as community arts development. It will also offer rehearsal space, story, a display area, meeting rooms and an artist-in-residence studio.
The Minister said: "The centre will provide a new cultural heart for Strabane. It showcases the work of two Departments for which I am responsible. A former cattle yard has been regenerated through the work of the DSD's North West Development Office.
"I consider investment in the arts as a superb opportunity for economic regeneration for any area, and in this particular case, a great opportunity to improve the cultural, social and economic life of Strabane.
Funding for the £2.8 million project is being supported by BSP / SDC (£750,000), Arts Lottery (£750,000), Department for Social Development (£725,000), Strabane District Council (£533,909), Foundation for Arts & sports (£120,000).
Construction commenced in July 2005 with an estimated completion time of 18 months.
