Study tour looks at south American beef industry

The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) has organised a study tour to South America for Northern Ireland beef industry representatives.

The group will visit the Mercosur region, and in particular, Argentina and Uruguay, at the end of September.

The tour is part of the Department's Supply Chain Awareness Programme which was developed in response to the Vision Report. Published in 2001 it seeks to improve communication and integration within supply chains and develop awareness of market requirements and best practice methods.

The beef industry in Argentina and Uruguay is based mostly on British breeds and a DARD representative said he believed a visit to the region would offer industry leaders from the local beef sector a valuable opportunity to observe and discuss new ideas and concepts.

The group will include Ulster Farmers' Union representatives, producers, breeders, Young Farmers Clubs of Ulster, government officials, processors and others from the ancillary sector. In both countries the group will visit European Union approved abattoirs and farmer suppliers, as well as meeting with government and industry representatives.
