Blitz on underage drinking in west Belfast
Police in west Belfast have seized almost 400 bottles of alcohol as part of a crackdown against underage and on-street drinking and its affect on the community.
The ongoing operation began in June and is just one of a number of actions against underage and on street drinking in recent months in West Belfast.
During the operation police seized over 250 bottles and tins of beer, 111 large and small bottles of Alco pops, 24 large and small bottles of cider, spirits and wine. A total of 40 people have been reported to Belfast City Council for on-street drinking since April.
A spokesperson for the police said that the ongoing operations demonstrated the police commitment to dealing with the issue.
"Police in West Belfast have responded to the concerns raised with us by tackling this issue," they said.
"However, much more can be achieved if everyone in the community works together, and we hope to make more progress to that end very soon.
"Most of all, however, parents need to be aware of the dangers their children are being exposed to by underage drinking. They are at much greater risk of being involved in accidents or assaults or caught up in other criminality."
Neighbourhood Police Officers, supported by uniformed Response Police Officers from West Belfast District Command Unit in partnership with off-license operators, youth groups and alcohol and substance abuse advisory units, led the initiative.
