Enniskillen rider dies in Ballybunion crash

On Sunday morning, Enniskillen rider Richard Britton was killed after his 250cc bike crashed during the Ballybunion Road Race in County Kerry.

Mr Britton, 34, who was married with a five-year-old son, was one of the top road racers in Ireland and had won several national and international road racing titles.

It appears that the bike may have experienced mechanical problems. Eyewitnesses said the machine appeared to seize throwing Mr Britton off. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The race was part of the inaugural meeting of the Ballybunion Road Race. Following the fatality the meeting was subsequently abandoned.

Mr Britton had finished fifth in this year's Isle of Man TT, in a meeting marred by a number of fatalities.

There have been renewed calls for road racing to be banned in the wake of Mr Britton's death.
