Patients to benefit from new GP contract
Health Minister Shaun Woodward has said that a system which gives GPs incentives to provide higher quality services to patients will significantly improve health care in Northern Ireland.
Under the new Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF), GPs are rewarded for outcomes they achieve with their patients and are therefore encouraged to provide higher quality of care, for example, in the management of chronic disease.
The Minister said: "GPs are now being remunerated for achieving results in the quality of care they provide to their patients. Increasing the level of investment in GP practices can only be good news for patients, who benefit from high quality care and for GPs who have the satisfaction of seeing real improvements in their patients.
"For the first time, Northern Ireland has comprehensive information on the prevalence of chronic diseases across 10 clinical areas, such as diabetes and heart disease. By recording patient information, GPs will be able to recall individual details more easily and check that follow-up appointments have been made."
QOF is a new system that was introduced on 1st April 2004 as a fundamental part of the new General Medical Services (GMS) contract.
It is designed to remunerate general practices for providing good quality care to their patients, and to help fund work to further improve the quality of health care delivered.
