Student security campaign launched by police

Police today encouraged students to ‘lock up before they leave’ as part of a new ‘It’s Good 2 B Secure’ campaign.

As most students start or return to school this week, a specially produced film, aimed at raising awareness about securing property, will be shown to all students as they start the new semester.

Domestic burglaries have fallen in South Belfast by 37%, however the percentage of student victims in the area remains a concern to police. It is hoped this new campaign will help remind students to take some simple crime prevention steps in their property.

Commenting at the film launch at Queen's University, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Professor Gerry McCormac said: "Queen's University is delighted to be working in partnership with the other members of the 'House Safe University Forum' in developing initiatives that will help safeguard the safety of our students and their property."

In June 2004, the ‘House Safe University Forum’ was set up by police working in partnership with both Queen’s University and University of Ulster to raise awareness among students that they could be a victim of burglary and give crime prevention advice about securing their property.

The new campaign aims to highlight the practical steps that students can take to secure their property.
