Paramilitaries behind organised crime - survey

Three quarters of people in Northern Ireland believe that paramilitary organisations are responsible for organised crime in the province.

‘Views on Organised Crime in Northern Ireland: Findings from the January 2005 Northern Ireland Omnibus Survey’ also revealed that 78% of those surveyed associate drug dealing with organised crime.

Over half (56%) said that they would report someone if they knew they were associated with organised crime while over two thirds of respondents (69%) said they would report this information to the police.

The majority of people surveyed (93%) thought that the police had the main role in tackling organised crime while 62% of people thought that the government had a role in managing organised crime.

Overwhelmingly, 95% thought that there was a problem with organised crime in Northern Ireland, of which over two thirds (68%) thought that this problem was very serious.

Friday's bulletin is based on an analysis of fifteen questions that were included in the January 2005 Northern Ireland Omnibus Survey, a personal interview survey of 1,182 adults living in private households throughout Northern Ireland.

The Bulletin describes public awareness of organised crime and knowledge of the Organised Crime Task Force.

The Bulletin can be obtained from NIO Statistics and Research on 028 9052 7534.
