Woodward welcomes suicide prevention initiative
Health Minister Shaun Woodward today welcomed the Northern Ireland Commissioner for Children and Young People's "Message to the Minister" suicide prevention initiative.
In today's initiative, the Commission said it wanted young people to let them know what they think the suicide Taskforce and the Minister should be doing to help young people with mental health issues.
Responding to the launch, Mr Woodward said: "Suicide and self-harm are tragic problems and we all need to work together to find better solutions.
"I recently established a Taskforce to develop a regional strategy to reduce these unnecessary deaths, particularly among young men. It is currently engaging with a wide range of individuals and organisations.
"I am particularly keen to hear the views of children and young people, and I very much welcome the Commissioner's initiative. This will provide an excellent opportunity for us to work together and will also allow children and young people to have a say in the development of the strategy."
The are around 150 suicides in Northern Ireland each year with just over 40% of these young men aged under 35 years.
