Craigavon boasts first for local mountain bikers
Sports Minister David Hanson has launched Northern Ireland's first purpose built Mountain Bike Trail in Craigavon.
The trail, which is approximately ten kilometres in length and circumnavigates Craigavon's lakes, is the first to be designed within a city park in the UK and features seven kilometres of narrow purpose built singletrack trail with an earth or stone surface.
Congratulating Craigavon Borough Council and the Countryside Access and Activities Network (CAAN), who are behind the project, Mr Hanson said: "My Department and the Sports Council for Northern Ireland are striving to provide better facilities and opportunities for people to participate in sport - regardless of ability, age and gender and mountain biking ties in very much with that agenda.
"With three more cycling trails planned for this year and a total of 26 trails planned for sites throughout Northern Ireland the public will have every opportunity to participate in quality off-road cycling in a planned, managed and safe environment."
The Sports Council for Northern Ireland have awarded funding of £35,950 from the Lottery to support the development of the project.
