Minister launches biosciences research centre
Employment and Learning Minister Angela Smith has launched the Centre of Molecular Biosciences at the University of Ulster's Coleraine campus.
The Centre is one of 13 research centres of excellence made possible by the Department for Employment and Learning's Support Programme for University Research (SPUR), which aims to help drive the local economy by investing in world-class research facilities.
Speaking at the launch, the Minister said: "We have made great strides in the last few years to ensure that university research is both funded as well as it ought to be and is integrated into the fabric of the society and economy of Northern Ireland.
"Investment into the research base is a necessity and should be a priority if we are serious about improving the lives of people here."
The SPUR programme, which supports those areas capable of competing at an international level, has contributed £94 million over a period of seven years.
Launched in 2000, the programme is funded as a 50/50 partnership between the Department for Employment and Learning and the charitable organisation Atlantic Philanthropies.
