Open doors encourage viewing of architectural heritage

The Environment and Heritage Service (EHS) is encouraging people of all ages to discover Northern Ireland’s architectural gems this weekend.

Chief Executive Richard Rogers said: “This weekend we celebrate our built heritage in European Heritage Open Days. These provide rare opportunities, free of charge, to see inside buildings, many of which are not normally open to the public.

“These Open Days offer a chance to see inside a jail or courthouse, walk around a stately home or 200 year old gate lodge, come aboard a WW1 battleship, or visit Templemore Baths, and many more interesting places.

“We are fortunate to have a rich built heritage and its diversity is reflected in the range of buildings whose doors will be open this weekend. There is something for everyone, no matter what age or background. There are private houses, public buildings, gardens, churches, ancient monuments and a fire station. You can also join guided walks in historic towns and villages.”

Mr Rogers added: “I would like to thank all those owners who are so generously opening their buildings to the public.”

The weekend is organised by EHS and there are 215 buildings of all descriptions throughout Northern Ireland open to visitors free of charge over the weekend of September 10 and 11.

Some of the architectural ‘gems’ in Belfast this year are:
  • HMS Caroline
  • Provincial Masonic Hall, Rosemary Street
  • Stormont Castle
  • St. Malachy’s College Chapel
  • Former Harland & Wolff Headquarters, Queen’s Island
  • Belfast Harbour Commissioners Office
Mr Rogers reminded people that some locations may be open for one of the two days only and to check the brochure carefully.

Brochures detailing all of the open properties and the various events taking place are available from libraries and Tourist Information Centres across Northern Ireland.

An online version of the brochure detailing the sites participating in the European Heritage open day is available at http://www.ehsni.gov.uk/built/built.shtml
