Seven arrested following Belfast disturbances

Seven people have been arrested following disturbances in north Belfast on Monday.

The attacks on police began at around 10am as officers carried out a series of searches in the Woodvale area of north Belfast.

Fire crews were also attacked with bricks and bottles while a number of vehicles were also set alight.

Superintendent Gary White said nothing could justify the attacks which occurred following the searches.

"Even if police officers were heavy-handed, and I'm not for one second accepting that they were, but even if they were, does that justify three or four hours of rioting, petrol bombing and paint bombing?" he said.

"Seven vehicles have been hijacked, some of which have been burned out, people have lost their livelihoods. I just think it seems to be a convenient excuse."

Two of those arrested are due in court on Tuesday charged with public order offences linked to the disturbances.
