Extra protection for townscapes announced
New planning policies will aim to protect the distinctive character and appearance of our towns and villages, Environment Minister Jeff Rooker said today.
Announcing the publication of the new Areas of Townscape Character policies, Mr Rooker, said the new policies underlined his commitment to the protection of built heritage in Northern Ireland.
"The mix and layout of buildings of different ages, styles and functions add to the quality of life of local communities," he continued.
"I want to reinforce the local identity of our townscape areas through the appropriate control of demolition and by ensuring that new development proposals respect and, where possible, enhance the appearance and qualities of each area. This will help maintain their distinctive character for future generations.
"I am also encouraged by the public support for the introduction of demolition control for buildings in Areas of Townscape Character in December 2004. This has assisted in retaining those buildings that make a positive contribution to the character of these areas and will continue to do so."
Mr Rooker also stressed that everyone involved in development in a townscape area, particularly those living there, should seek to ensure that any work to property respects and is sympathetic to the particular qualities of the area.

Five New Coronavirus Cases Confirmed
Five new cases of coronavirus have been detected in Northern Ireland. The Public Health Agency confirmed the further spread of the flu-like virus on Sunday, bringing the total number of cases in the region to 12. The search is on to trace people who have been in contact with the latest cases.

Plans unveiled to enhance Armagh city centre
A comprehensive plan to restore the centre of Armagh City to its former glory has been launched today. Among the aims of the Armagh City Centre Integrated Development Plan are the enhancement of public areas and linkages, strengthening of retailing provision and ensuring the involvement of the local community.

Arrests Over £300k Drugs Seized Last Year
Two men have been arrested in County Tyrone following the seizure of suspected cocaine worth around £300,000 last year. The drugs were originally discovered in the Lisaclare Road area of Stewartstown in October 2018. Two men, aged 26 and 24 were arrested in the Omagh and Cookstown areas today, Thursday 06 June. Both remain in custody.

PSNI Issue Warning Over HMRC Fraud Scams
Police in L'Derry have issued a warning to the public after receiving several complaints in relation to HMRC fraud scams. Fraudsters are targeting older and vulnerable people demanding money and some victims are being threatened with arrest if they do not pay.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for wind across Northern Ireland on Monday, 06 February. The warning has been put in place from 11am until 10pm. Gusts of up to 50-60mph are expected throughout NI and power interruptions are also possible.
