Irishman to fight extradition

A convicted Irish terrorist arrested in Spain in connection with an IRA bomb attack at a British Army base in Germany 16 years ago is to fight extradition.

Leonard 'Bap' Hardy, 44, was arrested at a hotel in the Costa del Sol holiday resort of Torremolinos by Spanish police acting on an international arrest warrant issued by the authorities in Germany.

At a preliminary hearing in Madrid today, Hardy told the National Criminal Court that he will contest his extradition from Spain to Germany.

His arrest relates to the bombing of army base in Osnabruck in 1989. The base was badly damaged in the attack, however no-one was injured.

Hardy has been taken to the maximum security prison at Valdemora, near Madrid pending a full extradition hearing.

In 1990, he was sentenced to five years in jail by Dublin's Special Criminal Court for the possession of explosives.
