Sinn Fein councillor targeted in petrol bomb attack

The home of a Sinn Fein councillor has been targeted in a petrol bomb attack overnight.

Councillor Dessie Ward was inside his Edenderry Park home in Banbridge with his mother and younger brother when the device was thrown at the property at around 11.45pm.

No one was injured in the attack however scorch damage was caused to the front door of the house.

Speaking on Tuesday, Cllr. Ward said: “I have no doubt that this attack was a deliberate attempt to try and kill myself and my family carried out by unionist paramilitaries.

“This is not an isolated attack. Nationalists in the Banbridge area have frequently been attacked and intimidated. Across the six counties in recent weeks there has been a sustained unionist paramilitary campaign against Catholics and nationalists."

Councillor Ward was elected to Banbridge district council in May and is Sinn Fein's only sitting councillor in the chamber.

Man Shot In Leg In West Belfast
A man has been shot in the leg in west Belfast. The incident occurred in the Ardmonagh Gardens in Turf Lodge at about 22:30 on Tuesday. Police have said the man, reported to be in his 30s, was taken to hospital for treatment. His injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

Man Injured In Paramilitary Style Attack
A man has been shot in the leg in a paramilitary style attack in west Belfast. The attack happened in Beechmount Crescent at around 8pm on Tuesday. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening and he has been discharged from hospital. SDLP Lower Falls Councillor Colin Keenan said: "I condemn the use of violence, this never solves anything.

Arson Attack On Polish Family Condemned
SDLP Larne Councillor Martin Wilson has condemned an arson attack on the home of a Polish family in Mark Street in Glenarm. He said the stark contrast from what the local Polish community offer our society to those who carried this out are there for all to see. Mr Wilson said: "I utterly condemn this attack.
