Man beaten with wheel brace during attempted hijacking
A man has been treated in hospital after being beaten around the head with a wheel brace during an attempted hijacking in Newtownabbey at the weekend.
Shortly before 4.30am on Saturday the victim and another woman were sitting in a BMW car at Hazelbank Park close to the M5 motorway, when another small dark coloured car with two men on board pulled up alongside them.
The two men approached the driver’s side of the BMW, opened the door and dragged the driver from the vehicle beating him about the head with the wheel brace. The men also demanded the female hand over her handbag.
The assailants then made off in the direction of Belfast in the red BMW car followed by the small dark coloured car.
The injured man was taken to hospital with head injuries while his female companion was left badly shaken, but uninjured, by the ordeal.
Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed any suspicious activity in the Hazelbank Park area between 4am and 4.30am to contact them on 028 9065 0222 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
